Cutout Lotus Urli Bowls – Set of 3 Sitting Urlis, Gold
An urli is the wide, shallow bowl traditionally kept near the entrance of a South Indian home, filled with water and floated with flower heads and small diyas. This set gives you three of them in graduated sizes, each raised on a short pedestal foot, with the sides pierced right through in a lotus-and-leaf pattern so a candle inside throws the shape onto the table.

Why this one
- The cutouts are the point. The lotus and leaf shapes are cut clean through the metal, not stamped or printed on. Put a tealight in and the pattern appears on whatever the bowl is standing on.
- Smooth satin gold, not hammered. If you want texture, the hammered set is a different listing. This one is deliberately plain-surfaced so the piercing reads clearly.
- Three sizes that nest and group. 6, 9 and 12.5 inches across. They cluster on one table or spread over three surfaces.
- 1.5 kg for the set of three — about 3.3 lb / 53 oz. Heavy enough to sit still when you fill it with water, light enough to move one-handed.
- Raised on a foot. The pedestal lifts the bowl about an inch off the surface, which keeps a wet base off your table and gives the group some height.
Which of the four lotus urli sets is this?
We make four sets that look similar in a thumbnail and are quite different in a room. Two things separate them: whether the bowl is pierced with cutouts or hammered, and whether it sits low or stands on a stem.
- Cutout, sitting — this set. Pierced lotus cutouts, short foot, 4.5–7 in tall
- Hammered, sitting — Hammered dimpled surface, short foot, 5.5–8 in tall
- Hammered, standing — Hammered bowls on tall slim stems, 12.5–16 in tall
- Cutout, standing — Pierced lotus cutouts on tall stems, 13.5–17.5 in tall
Where it works
Entryway console, filled with water and marigold heads — the traditional placement. Dining table centre, all three in a line with floating tealights. Pooja room or home temple, for flowers and prasad. Coffee table, using the large one alone with a single flower. They also work empty, as a sculptural group.
Gifting
A common Diwali and griha pravesh gift, and a safe housewarming present for someone whose taste you do not know — it is useful, it is not breakable, and it is not tied to one faith. Also given at weddings and for Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.
These go out as gift sets often enough that we keep stock deep. If you need several — wedding favours, a Diwali order for a team, return gifts for a large function — email contact@urliutsav.com before you order. Bulk pricing is available and we will confirm quantities and timing with you first.
Frequently asked questions
Are these hammered?
No. The surface is smooth satin gold. The hammered version is a separate set — see the comparison above.
Will water leak out through the cutouts?
No. The cutouts are in the upper sidewall, above the water line. The bowl itself is solid.
Do the candles come with it?
No. Tealights, diyas and flowers are not included — just the three bowls.
Is this real gold or brass?
Neither. It is iron with a gold polish finish. That is why the set costs what it does and why it is light enough to lift with one hand.
How much water does the large one hold?
Enough to float a layer of petals and three or four tealights. It is a shallow bowl, roughly two inches deep — designed for surface display, not volume.
How do I clean them?
Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not soak them, do not put them in a dishwasher, and dry them fully after you empty the water out. The gold is a polished coating over iron, not solid metal, so abrasive scourers and harsh cleaners will wear it.
Can I put water in them?
Yes — that is what they are for. Fill, float, then empty and dry the same evening rather than leaving water standing for days.
Can they go outside?
For an evening on a covered patio, yes. Not for permanent outdoor use: they are iron underneath and will rust if they are rained on or left damp.
What if something arrives damaged?
Shipping is insured. Send a photo to contact@urliutsav.com and we will replace the piece or make it right.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days in original condition and packaging. Return shipping is arranged and paid by the customer.
