He is Shiva's mount and his gatekeeper, and the custom is to touch his horns and look between them toward the deity. This is that seated Nandi carved in mango wood, nine inches nose to tail, and painted by hand.

Product details

9 inches long x 7 inches high x 4 inches wide

Weight: 860 g (approx. 1.9 lb)

Mango wood, hand-carved and hand-painted

Seated - couchant - on an integral base

Made in India

Price is per statue - choose one colour above

Why this one

860 g of solid mango wood - a pound and a bit - carved in the round rather than pressed or cast, so the fold of the dewlap and the turn of the head read from any angle. The painting is Rajasthani folk work: a flat ground colour with floral and dot detailing laid over it freehand, the horns and hooves picked out separately. Every Shiva temple has a Nandi seated in the courtyard facing the sanctum, and devotees look between his horns toward the deity.

Which way should it face?
Toward the deity, if you are placing it near a mandir. That is the temple convention: Nandi always looks at Shiva.

Is it a consecrated idol?
No. It is a hand-carved decorative statue in the folk idiom, not a consecrated murti.

How big is it?
Nine inches from nose to tail, seven inches tall at the hump, four inches wide. Leafy Green is the freshest, Cadmium Green the warmest, Fence Green the deepest.

Will mine look exactly like the photograph?
Close, not identical. Every statue is carved and painted by hand, so the proportions and the floral work vary slightly between pieces.

Is it solid wood?
Yes - solid mango wood, carved in the round.
